PETER max

(b.1937)

German Painter and Printmaker

Peter Max, born in Berlin, Germany in 1937, is known throughout the world for his new age style cosmic imagery and multi-colored blends, from visionary pop artist of the 1960's to master of dynamic neo expressionism.

His family left Germany in 1938 and traveled to Shanghai, China, then Tibet, Israel, and Paris before settling in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953. Max received formal art training at the Art Students League of New York, the Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts. In 1962, he opened the "Daly & Max Studio" with his friend Tom Daly, later joined by Don Rubbo, creating books and advertisements. Max served as the official artist for numerous major events, including the Grammy Awards, the Super Bowl, the World Cup, and the World Series. He created art for several U.S. presidents and was involved in the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in 1981. He also painted a Boeing 777 for Continental Airlines in 1999.

Max was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019. His vibrant and optimistic art, reflecting ideals of peace and love, continues to be exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.
